Welcoming Rosy, your Avontage Community Manager

This week’s Members Corner blog is a very special one. As we are building and growing the Avontage community, we’re deliberate about the values and the culture we’re creating for our community. We are a collaborative community for creative and growth-minded local business owners and freelancers in service of others. We’re building a trusted online local community to practice the art of collaborative growth.

And that’s why we’re extremely excited to introduce you to your new Community Manager, Rosy Mack. Rosy embodies the spirit of the Avontage community and what we stand for. With her leadership and collaborative spirit she has already impacted our community for the better.

Many of you already have connected with Rosy via phone or coffee meetings. Rosy’s role is to connect with every member of our community and help you become successful on Avontage. So reach out to her by calling 602-730-1719 to ask your questions or schedule a meeting HERE.

Rosy is a professional modern dancer, a mindfulness coach, a small-business owner, a community connector, an astrology maven, an avid reader, and a Ravenclaw. What sets her apart is Rosy’s dedication to building a confident and excited community by using her talents to connect people to their greatest potential, whether that’s through one-on-one astrology coaching, creative mindfulness workshops, community management here at Avontage, or creating and performing as a movement artist. She’s a native of Phoenix, AZ where she lives with her musician husband Alex, runs her non-profit performing arts company Ignite Collaborative, helps people understand their unique life-path through astrology, runs a program in local schools helping kids in detention practice mindfulness and compassion, and connects the members of Avontage as the community manager.

To learn more about Rosy, we asked her the following questions:

I am an Arizona girl, through and through. I was born here, went to school, here, and still live here today with my husband and pet turtle. I have been dancing since I was 2 years old, and dance continues to be a vastly important part of my life. When I’m not dancing, I am usually practicing yoga, painting, in a pottery class, or binge-watching a 90’s family drama on Hulu.

To me, the best thing about Arizona is its diverse landscape. I love to take day trips out of Phoenix to places like Flagstaff, Jerome, or Bisbee. It always amazes me that in just a two-hour drive, I will see so many different landscapes. It goes from city, to desert, to forest so quickly. I love it.

I started my own performing arts company in 2011 with the mission to foster artistic collaborations and create impactful art centered around community. Although I had already danced professionally in two other companies by this point, I was still SO inexperienced when it came to dancing, choreographing, directing, and running the management side of the business. I was extremely fortunate to have the help of two other friends who co-directed the company with me. We worked together to learn everything we could about business administration, choreography, booking shows, and of course, dancing. Now, the company is a 501(c)3, I have a board of directors and a managing director helping with the administrative stuff, I am the sole artistic director, and we have sold out the theater on multiple occasions. I still have a lot to learn, but it’s amazing to me to look back and see how far I’ve come. I’m definitely proud of myself.

I found Avontage on Instagram and immediately loved the idea. As an artist, I often supplement my income with various skills I have. Avontage made it super easy for me to list my different offers and I was successful in selling them almost right away. I love that Avontage has so many different types of offers.

My message to the Avontage community, and really the entire world, is that movement can change your life if you know how to use it. It can increase your problems solving skills, reveal deep desires and struggles, and help you connect with yourself and the world around you.

I’ve always struggled with leadership. I feel like I am a good leader, but I really struggle with anxiety in conflicts. As the artistic director of a company, there are conflicts sometimes and I have to solve them. I’ve learned that it’s important to trust my instincts and honor my goals and vision for my company. Remembering that helps me ground myself in anxious situations.

I don’t know that I attribute my success to any one thing. I think some of my success is just being at the right place at the right time. I know I am good at connecting with people and success is a lot about networking and creating a support system around your business. I think I’ve done that very well.

I try to have a strong support system of people to help guide me in my business. I believe that mentors are necessary and I also think that you can learn something from EVERYBODY you encounter. In a way, the world is my mentor.

Advice for someone starting out – Show gratitude. Write thank you notes, reach out to people who have helped you, thank your clients for choosing you. The little things matter.

Work-Life balance is hard when I work remotely and at odd hours. It has helped me a ton to create a work schedule for myself and only work during those hours. I also try to schedule something fun for myself on a regular basis. Lately I’ve been taking a ceramics class every week. It helps me de-stress and focus on something new.

I am a big fan of reading, so I love this question. My favorite book is The Bone People by Keri Hulme. It’s a novel filled with poetry and freewriting and songs and narrative. It’s beautifully written and has inspired my dance work so much. As far as books that apply to business, I loved Find Your Truth by Lou Redmond. He’s actually a friend of mine and he wrote this book about the period of his life where he quit his corporate job and set off on a path towards self-discovery. It’s definitely inspiring.  Here is the link to his book.
