To get to know Dustin a bit more, we asked him the following questions:
Tell us about your background, hometown, family, hobbies, passions?
My name is Dustin Trout, I grew up in Yuma, Arizona with my family and moved to Tempe when I bought my first house. I’ve played baseball my whole life and was lucky enough to continue on into college until I got hurt and had to stop playing. That’s when I got into marketing and learned Google ads and just kept going from there until I worked at a couple of agencies but quickly realized there was always something holding me back from what I wanted to do so I decided to start my own agency and here we are today a year in and growing day by day.
What do you love about Arizona?
I love that it’s my home state. Really, what isn’t there to love about Arizona, if you can deal with 3 months of heat, it’s a perfect state. My dad always said, “you never have to shovel heat”. Plus, Phoenix is a weird city in the sense that it’s a top 5 cities in the U.S. but doesn’t feel like a “big city”. We are growing so it will be interesting to see how that changes.
Tell us about your business. How long ago and how did you get started? What service(s) or product(s) do you offer?
I started EIC Agency about a year ago because I got laid off from my job. Growing up I knew I wanted to have something of my own and from being in the marketing space for over 7 years once I got laid off I was confident enough to try and build a team and see what we can do on our own. We’re a full-service agency so we provide services such as video production or any type of content production like podcasts, blogs, written words, ad copies, etc. We can then help get the content out there by offering marketing services so we can run Facebook Ads, Google Ads, LinkedIn, and all those platforms you can think of as well as collect the data and use it for strategy to improve results and eventually scale once we find what works, we also help with branding, email marketing, website design and more.
Who’s your ideal client? What’s the biggest problem you solve for them?
Anyone can be our ideal client as long as you have a website and want to improve your presence in the digital world. We help clients improve their brand awareness while driving results that help grow the brand/business through digital marketing while constantly working to provide a greater return on ad spend.
How do you market your business? How are people aware of your business?
We market our business the same way we preach others to market their business which is by running Facebooks Ads, Google Ads, LinkedIn Ads and posting every day on our social media channels to reach as many people as we can organically and really just building that community around the brand.
Tell us some of the challenges and lessons you’ve learned since you started your business.
The biggest challenge starting out was keeping track of everything. From current projects to invoices, to trying to grow. Learning the value of shopping for tools along with hiring help has helped overcome this.
As hiring people began, the next challenge was managing others since I have never been a manager before. Patience, time, and learning together has been the quickest way to get through this hurdle but is something I will always be working on.
To what do you attribute your success?
I wouldn’t say I’m quite there yet since we are just under a year old. We are still working on finding that success. Working as many hours as possible to figure out how to grow. I figured I’d give it 5 years of non-stop hard work and see what myself and my team can build. We’ll be at least a bit closer but still far from successful. Success is leaving a legacy so I guess it will be a while until I really see success. Until then….
Whom do you seek advice from for your business? Whom do you like to follow in the business world? Why?
Gary Vee. He’s the one that got the fire started. The grind became addicting after I saw that I put hours into something and then opportunity happened. Now, I don’t seek one person for advice but I do love asking any other agency owner how they run things. Hearing trends and what others are doing spark ideas so I’d say the marketing world and my peers is where I get my advice. I have been listening to a podcast quite often lately called, “Build A Better Agency” by Drew Mclellan that has been a great resource for perspective.
If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out, what would it be?
Love what you’re doing because it’s going to be a grind. Days are long, mornings are early, and nights are late BUT once you start seeing the growth, it’s all worth it. The hardest part is the beginning. It’s like starting a new job. At first, everything is difficult. Month by month you learn and you learn until finally, it becomes easy. Starting a business is the same way. Figuring out how to operate, get paid, price yourself out…..it’s all learning. Just be patient and keep chasing that fire. I still follow this advice daily.
How do you achieve work-life balance?
By having a process that works for me and my schedule so I can get all my stuff done but also spend time with family, friends and be able to have personal time. It helps to map everything out on my calendar and plan the day/week ahead of me
